Roses, birds and growing bulbs paintings

Hello

It’s the Australia Day long weekend and we are relaxing after a very busy week back at work. It’s lovely to have time to paint again. What are you doing this weekend?

This week more flower paintings with a bird and spring bulbs thrown in. While I have been painting with watercolors I would like to try acrylics as well. That’s on the agenda for next weeks paintings.

Pink and Yellow Rose

Roses are one of the most beautiful flowers. The pink and yellow roses in a pink vase was quick to draw. The challenge was getting the colors of the petals just right.  I mixed some gauche with the watercolors and ended up with a thicker paint consistency.  This painting would have been better on watercolor paper instead of my sketch book.

Bulbs in Red Dish

It’s mid summer here so bulbs are a long way away. Still, I love them and am obsessed with painting them lately. Not sure why.

This painting was completed in less than half an hour. It shows because there is a distinct lack of detail.  I also had trouble with drawing a perfect circle for the dish. I guess it’s all about practice.

More Growing Bulbs

I enjoyed drawing and painting bulbs growing in pots on a kitchen shelf.  This painting was easier to paint because I had an image I was using as a reference guide.

Hydrangeas in a vase

Hydrangeas are one of my favourite flowers. Our garden has a range of Hydrandreas mostly in whites, pale pinks and pale blues. While they are beautiful they are very difficult to draw and paint.  They have so many leaves its hard to decide how to draw and paint them.

I am not entirely happy with this painting but I like the colors.  The vase needs to be slightly smaller.  The proportions and colors of the Hydrangeas are also not quite right.

Free as a bird

There is something magical about birds. The have the freedom to fly away whenever they want to. They can travel in any direction at any time.

Birds are not easy to draw. The gentle way their head curves into their bodies is tricky. Their feet are dainty with complicated angels.

Whatever you are doing this weekend I hope you find lots of time to do the things you love to do.
