It’s school holidays and we’ve been away for a short week in New South Wales visiting family. On the way home we stopped by the Hunter Valley for some wine tasting and two delicious days at The Carriages, a boutique hotel and winery.
Carriages House – Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, NSW – Holiday Rating of 8.5/10
Located at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley, Carriages is a beautiful winery offering boutique accommodation available in one of two country cottages – The Carriages House and the Gatehouse Cottage. The two buildings are located in a secluded part of the property separated by a path and surrounded by magnificent, tall she-oak trees.
We stayed in one of two charming Gable Suites located on the second floor of the Carriages House. Downstairs there are six rooms along the front of the verandah with french doors. To access the Gable Suites you need to access a stairway at the back of the property.
The Suite itself is one very spacious room with a king size bed, a couch, a dining room table and a bathroom. A chimney provides some separation between the bedroom area and the rest of the room. There is no kitchen and a continental breakfast is served each morning to your door at 8.00 a.m. Included in the breakfast basket are fresh croissants, fruit, yoghurt and cereal. Definitely enough food to start a busy day of wine tasting.
The only view from the Suite is the small upstairs stained glass window which provides a narrow view to the front of the property. Then there is the view from the back door which looks out to the rear of the property onto the luscious trees and garden below.
My favourite part of the property is the glorious garden. A beautiful garden full of magical flowers and trees. There were still a few roses blooming and the gardenia bush was just budding. The magnificent tall she-oak trees provide plenty of shade to sit under and have that first glass of Hunter Valley wine. Best of all the delightful and playful border collie belonging to the owners of the property, Nick and Bec Diamond comes over to welcome you once you have settled in.
Oh, and lets not forget about the wines. As keen Chardonnay wine drinkers we were very impressed with Carriages Chardonnay. It had just enough oak in it for our tastes. We are looking forward to enjoying the case of Chardonnays in the months ahead once. It will bring back some lovely memories.
If you are looking for a convenient location in the Hunter Valley then this accommodation is just the thing. You can spend the days in the wineries and retreat to the beautiful gardens with a champagne in the afternoon. There is even a pool if you are keen. It was too cold to swim but in summer it would be a lovely way to cool off. If you are after complete privacy then the Carriages House might not be the answer. There were people in the rooms below most days and while they were quiet you could hear their conversations at times. For privacy the Gatehouse Cottage might be a better solution but is more expensive.
Overall we loved the property and enjoyed our stay. We gave the accommodation an 8.5/10 and would stay there again.
