Make a cross stitch cake napkin

It’s been a while since I shared a new cross stitch design with you.  Inspired by one of my favourite color combinations, white and pink I have created a cross stitch cake napkin featuring a white heart with a lace edge. While I have stitched the design on pink cotton with waste canvas, you can of course stitch the design onto Aida or Linen.

I have sewn the napkin but you could stitch the design onto a store bought napkin or handkerchief. You could also use the design to decorate a wedding napkin to give to your guests with a piece of wedding cake.

Here’s how to make the square edged napkin;

Cut a square to your desired dimensions.  Fold the hem of the fabric all around the square once and then again and iron into place. Next, pin the edges as shown in the image.

Use pins to keep the folded edges in place. Next use your sewing machine to sew around the edges of the napkin.

Once you have sewn around the napkin it should look like the above image.  Take care to sew as close to the folded edge as possible. Once that’s done iron the fabric flat.

Cut a square piece of waste canvas and pin to the corner of your napkin or other area you wish to stitch.  Make sure to stitch around the napkin so the waste canvas does not slip while you stitch your cross stitch.

Use the heart cross stitch chart to stitch the heart on the napkin.

Once you have finished stitching your design cut away the waste canvas and pull the threads out from behind the stitching.  See the “How to use Waste Canvas” tutorial for more details.

Press your finished napkin and “voila” you can use it as you wish.
