Pretty Flamingo

Do you remember Manfred Mann’s song “Pretty Flamingo”?  I really liked that song when I was growing up. The song came out in 1966. My parents used to play it all the time in our house. The other day I heard it again and it reminded me of a happy lovely place long ago. A time when my mother was still laughing and taking long walks holding my hand through the tall grass in the fields at the back of our house. By our side was our German Shepherd “Rex” and my brother in his pram. It’s funny how songs can take you right back to a place in your life just by hearing it again.

Remember the lyrics?

On our block all of the guys call her flamingo
Cause her hair glows like the sun
And her eyes can light the sky
When she walks she moves so fine like a flamingo
Crimson dress that clings so tight
She’s out of reach and out of sight
When she walks by she brightens up the neighborhood
Oh every guy would make her his if he just could
If she just would
Some sweet day I’ll make her mine pretty flamingo
Then every guy will envy me
Cause paradise is where I’ll be
Pretty flamingo pretty flamingo
When she walks by she brightens up the neighborhood
Oh every guy would make her his if he just could
If she just would

If you’d like to hear it this clip is the original and is pretty good quality.

With Manfred’s song swirling around in my head it was obvious that a pretty pink flamingo sketch was in order. The lines are not perfect but I am liking the imperfection of the lines. It’s great to be free to draw as quickly as I like and it does not matter if it’s not perfect.  The minute I worry about perfect lines or color the sketch ends up looking “tight” and tense.

Hope you have a great weekend!

P.S I will starting posting the sketches more often rather than once a week. One of my readers suggested it would be nice to see the sketches as they are done rather than all in one post.
